India is the world's second-largest rice producer after
China, owing to the country's enormous rice cultivation area, favorable soil,
and climate conditions.
Rice accounts for more than 40% of the country's total food
grain production. According to figures given by the Indian government, the total
rice output in India in 2015-2016 was 104.32 million.
Here are India's top ten rice-producing states.
The Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation's
website provides information on rice output by the state in India. Rice is mostly
produced in West Bengal, Uttar Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, and Punjab.
The top ten Indian states in terms of rice production in
tonnes during 2015-2016 are:
1. West Bengal
West Bengal is India's largest rice-producing state. Rice
production takes up about half of the country's arable area. In the fiscal year
2016, the state produced approximately 15.75 million tonnes of rice across 5.46
million hectares of cultivable land.
2. Uttar Pradesh
Uttar Pradesh is the second-largest rice-producing state,
with around 5.86 million hectares of rice-growing area yielding approximately
12.5 million tonnes of rice.
3. Province of Punjab
Punjab is the country's third-largest rice producer,
producing approximately 11.82 million tonnes of rice in 2015-2016. The state's
rice cultivation area was 2.97 million hectares.
