The Government of Uttarakhand has banned many pesticides.
The government of Uttarakhand recently declared that it will
introduce the Organic Agriculture Act, 2019 to make the use of agro-chemicals
illegal in specific places. It recommends a fine of INR 1 lakh and a sentence
of up to one year in prison for individuals who break the act's requirements by
employing chemical fertilizers or insecticides in blocks designated as organic
by the state government.
The productivity of farms is essential to farmers'
livelihoods and the nation's food security. Farming has become unprofitable due
to high-cost inputs and unpredictable market pricing.
Many farmers are opting for non-farm income-generating
occupations to leave farming. Pesticides and fertilizers, for example, play a
vital role in increasing yields, but their excessive usage not only raises
farming input costs, but also destroys soil health, damages biodiversity, and
poses health risks to living species.
The Uttarakhand Government has banned a total of 27
pesticides.
